From 1500s Italy to Your Home

There’s warmth, but it’s disciplined. Every line, every surface, every soft variation in tone feels intentional. The balance between chaos and order, light and shadow, perfection and imperfection. Inspired by Michelangelo’s devotion to stone. His belief that each block hides a soul waiting to be revealed. We seek the same poetry in marble, limestone, and travertine.

These tiles are not decorative. They are architectural. Designed to be lived with, touched, and aged into. From Rome historical buildings to modern kitchens, they create spaces that breathe: calm, tactile, and enduring.

At Mosaics & Company, we believe design should feel human. Every tile is a small act of intention, a reminder that beauty lasts when it’s built with purpose.

Antique Natural Stone Tiles: Marble, Limestone & Travertine

Some materials don't go out of style. They were never in style. They simply endure. Our collection of antique tiles brings together marble, limestone, and travertine sourced from the same geological formations that shaped the floors of Roman amphitheatres, Byzantine courtyards, and Moorish palaces.

Each tile carries the warmth, variation, and quiet authority of stone shaped over millennia.
At Mosaics & Company, we believe design should feel human. These are not decorative veneers. They are architectural materials built to be touched, aged into, and lived with for generations.

What Are Antique Natural Stone Tiles?

Antique tiles are tiles finished with a time-worn surface treatment that replicates centuries of natural wear. Rather than a polished, uniform surface, they display the deliberate imperfections such as subtle chips, tonal variation, gentle fossil traces, and organic veining that give each piece its character.

Unlike ceramic or porcelain imitations, every tile in our collection is quarried from real stone: marble, limestone, or travertine. The result is a surface that genuinely deepens in beauty over time rather than degrading with it.

The Three Stones in Our Collection

Marble: Formed under intense heat and pressure, marble offers bold veining, luminous depth, and a surface that has graced some of the world's most celebrated interiors. The Bianco di Michelangelo is a signature example: ivory white with dramatic veining, inspired by the stone Michelangelo believed held a soul waiting to be revealed.

Limestone: A sedimentary stone quarried across the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, limestone carries the warmth of the environments that formed it. The Margaux Beige recalls sunlit Roman amphitheatres in North Africa; the Pierre Bleue has paved Belgian Gothic cathedrals for over two thousand years. Fossil traces and natural striations are part of its story.

Travertine: Formed from mineral-rich spring water, travertine has a distinctive open texture and warm earthy palette. Its slightly irregular surface makes it one of the most slip-resistant natural stone options available, well-suited to bathrooms, entryways, and outdoor patios in mild climates.

Why Choose Antique Natural Stone Tiles?

The market is full of tiles that mimic the look of natural stone. Here is why choosing the real thing matters:

    • Authentic character: Minor chips, natural veining, and tonal variation are not flaws. They are authentic characteristics that create the timeless, weathered charm no factory can fully replicate.
    • Architectural durability: Natural stone tiles are designed to outlast the buildings around them. Properly sealed and maintained, marble and limestone floors endure for centuries.
    • Improves with age: Unlike porcelain, which shows wear as deterioration, antique stone develops patina that deepens its beauty over time.
    • Thermal compatibility: Natural limestone and marble work exceptionally well with underfloor radiant heating systems, making them ideal for bathrooms and open-plan living spaces.
    • Eco-conscious material: Sourced from natural quarries without synthetic manufacturing processes, natural stone is one of the most environmentally responsible flooring choices available.
    • Tactile quality: The surface of antique stone underfoot is unmistakable. No manufactured tile reproduces the weight, warmth, and texture of real stone.

Where to Use Antique Natural Stone Tiles

The versatility of antique natural stone makes it suitable across virtually every interior application. Here is how our customers use them most:

    Kitchen Floors & Backsplashes

Limestone and travertine perform exceptionally well in kitchens. Their natural heat resistance and durability withstand heavy daily use, while their warm tones complement both traditional country kitchens and contemporary minimalist spaces. Seal thoroughly before installation to protect against oils and acidic spills.

    Bathroom Floors & Shower Walls

The slip-resistant, time-worn surface of antique stone is ideal for wet rooms. Our tiles carry a DCOF value above 0.42, meeting the minimum standard for surfaces expected to be walked upon when wet. Pair with a penetrating sealant and unsanded grout for a professional, watertight finish.

    Entryways & Hallways

First impressions matter. An antique limestone or marble floor sets a tone of considered, enduring elegance the moment guests step inside. The time-worn finish also makes high-traffic wear virtually invisible: the floor simply continues to look as though it has always been there.

    Commercial Spaces

Restaurants, boutique hotels, and gallery spaces regularly choose antique natural stone for its ability to signal quality without effort. The durability of natural stone means it remains as impressive in year twenty as it did on opening day.

    Care, Sealing & Maintenance Guide

Natural stone is a porous material and requires proper care to maintain its beauty. Follow these guidelines to protect your investment:

    Sealing

Seal all natural stone tiles before and after installation using a penetrating sealant designed specifically for limestone, marble, or travertine. A penetrating sealer absorbs into the stone to provide long-term protection while preserving the antique finish. Re-seal annually in wet areas such as bathrooms and every two years in dry interior spaces. Please consult to the professional.

    Daily Cleaning

    • Sweep or vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove abrasive grit and debris.
    • Mop with a damp (not wet) mop and a pH-neutral cleaner formulated for natural stone.
    • Wipe spills immediately *especially acidic liquids like vinegar, citrus juice, or wine, which can etch the stone surface.
    • Never use bleach, abrasive scrubbers, or acidic household cleaners.

    Grouting

Use unsanded grout appropriate for natural stone installations. Unsanded grout provides a smooth finish without scratching polished or honed stone surfaces. Coloured grout can enhance the time-worn aesthetic; neutral tones allow the stone's natural variation to take centre stage.

    Outdoor Use

Our antique natural stone tiles are suitable for covered outdoor areas, patios, and walkways in mild climates. We do not recommend installation in direct contact with pool water, as pool chemicals can etch and discolour natural stone over time.

    Ordering, Samples & Lead Times

Order a Free Sample FirstNatural stone variation means the tile you see on screen will have subtle differences in the tile you receive and that is exactly what makes it special. We strongly recommend ordering a sample before committing to a full order so you can experience the weight, texture, and tone of the stone in your actual space and lighting.

    How Much to Order

Order 15–20% more than your measured area. This industry-standard buffer accounts for cuts, waste during installation, and ensures the pattern sits balanced and centred once laid.
